However, there is an important point to understand: a 10-year visa does not mean you can stay in the country for 10 years. Visa validity determines how long you may use the visa to seek entry, while the permitted length of each stay is determined by the country’s immigration rules.

Here are some of the destinations Nigerians should know about:

United Kingdom

The United Kingdom offers Long-Term Standard Visitor visas valid for 2, 5 or 10 years.

A 10-year UK visitor visa allows multiple visits during its validity, with a maximum stay of 6 months per visit. UKVI can also issue a shorter visa than the duration requested if the applicant does not meet the requirements for the longer period. (GOV.UK)

This option can be particularly relevant for people who expect to visit the UK regularly for tourism, visiting family or friends, or other permitted visitor activities.

Important: A 10-year UK visitor visa is not permission to live or work in the UK.

Canada

Canada is another major destination where a visitor visa can potentially be valid for up to 10 years.

Canadian immigration authorities may issue either a single-entry or multiple-entry visitor visa, depending on the applicant’s circumstances. A multiple-entry visa can be valid for up to 10 years, or until the passport or biometrics expire, whichever comes first. (Canada)

Most visitors can stay for up to 6 months per visit, although a border officer may authorize a different period. (Canada)

Mexico

Mexico also has a 10-year long-term visitor visa.

The Mexican government states that this category can be available to certain foreign nationals, including frequent travellers and people who can demonstrate sufficient financial resources, among other qualifying categories. (Gobierno de México)

Mexico’s current consular information also indicates that long-term visitor visas can allow stays of up to 180 days, subject to the applicable conditions. (Mi Consulado)

Therefore, Nigerian travellers should not assume that a 10-year Mexican visa is automatically available simply because they are applying for a visitor visa. Eligibility requirements must be met.

Brazil

Brazil has an interesting visa validity rule.

According to Brazil’s Federal Police, a visitor visa is generally valid for one year and allows multiple entries, but in cases of reciprocity, it can be valid for up to 10 years. (Serviços e Informações do Brasil)

This means applicants should check the rules applicable to their nationality and circumstances rather than assuming that every Nigerian applicant will receive a 10-year visa.

What About the United States?

This is where travellers need to be especially careful.

Although the United States is commonly associated with long-validity visitor visas for nationals of many countries, the current U.S. reciprocity schedule for Nigerian nationals lists:

• B-1: 1 entry — 3 months
• B-2: 1 entry — 3 months
• B-1/B-2: 1 entry — 3 months

So, at present, Nigerians should not assume that a U.S. B1/B2 visa will be issued as a 10-year multiple-entry visa. (Travel.state.gov)

This is an important distinction when comparing online reports about “10-year visas.”

What Does a 10-Year Visa Really Mean?

A long-term visa primarily gives you the ability to travel to the country during the visa’s validity period, subject to the conditions of that visa.

It does not automatically give you:

❌ 10 years of residence
❌ Permission to work
❌ Permission to study without the appropriate authorization
❌ Guaranteed entry every time you travel

For example, someone holding a 10-year UK visitor visa can normally stay for a maximum of 6 months per visit, rather than remaining in Britain continuously for 10 years. (GOV.UK)

Similarly, a Canadian visitor visa may be valid for up to 10 years while most visitors are permitted to stay for up to 6 months at a time. (Canada)

Who Should Consider a Long-Term Visitor Visa?

A long-term visitor visa may be particularly useful for Nigerians who:

• Regularly visit family or friends abroad
• Attend recurring business or professional events
• Have an established travel history
• Frequently travel for tourism
• Want to avoid applying for a new visitor visa for every planned trip, where the destination’s rules allow it

However, visa approval is never guaranteed. Each application is assessed according to the relevant country’s immigration rules and the applicant’s individual circumstances.
