International students seeking an opportunity to study in Russia now have a fresh scholarship opportunity to consider as registration for the 2026 Open Doors Russian Scholarship Project has officially opened. The international competition, organized by the Global Universities Association with support from Russia’s Ministry of Science and Higher Education, gives talented international students and young researchers an opportunity to pursue higher education or research in Russia.
The 2026 edition marks the 10th year of the Open Doors project. According to the official organizers, more than 600,000 people from over 200 countries have participated in the competition over the years, with more than 20,000 participants becoming winners or runners-up.
For prospective applicants from Nigeria and other countries, the opportunity is particularly noteworthy because the competition is open to foreign citizens and stateless persons. Applicants can participate online from their home countries, meaning Nigerian students do not need to travel to Russia to enter the competition.
The 2026 competition offers four academic tracks: Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctoral (PhD), and Postdoctoral. Bachelor’s applicants generally need to be between 16 and 23 years old, while Master’s applicants must be between 20 and 33. The Doctoral track is open to applicants aged 22 to 35 who have, or are completing, a relevant Master’s or Specialist degree. The Postdoctoral track is for applicants aged 24 to 39 who hold a PhD or equivalent qualification.
Applicants can choose from a broad range of subject areas, including Computer and Data Science, Applied Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, Business and Management, Clinical Medicine and Public Health, Engineering and Technology, Economics and Econometrics, Biology and Biotechnology, Chemistry and Materials Science, Education and Psychology, Politics and International Studies, Russian Language and Culture, Physical Sciences and Technology, Urbanism and Civil Engineering, and Earth and Environmental Sciences for Sustainability.
One of the biggest attractions of the program is the opportunity for winners to study tuition-free at Russian universities under the Russian Government quota for foreign citizens. Winners in the Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral tracks receive the right to pursue eligible programs with tuition funded from the federal budget. Winners may also receive priority when selecting degree programs at participating universities, subject to the relevant admission and language requirements.
The 2026 rules also provide for potential additional Russian Government grant support for eligible winners and runners-up who obtain the right to study under the quota and are prepared to undertake full-time study in Russian. The additional support can include transportation expenses, a monthly payment, medical insurance and accommodation expenses. However, applicants should understand that this additional support is subject to the applicable government requirements and should not automatically be interpreted as a guarantee that every winner will receive every living-expense benefit.
Applicants who do not speak Russian should not necessarily be discouraged. The official rules provide for additional Russian-language preparation where required. Eligible winners can undertake preparatory study before beginning a Russian-taught degree program, with the preparatory program funded from the federal budget.
The application process is competitive rather than a simple first-come, first-served scholarship application. For Bachelor’s and Master’s applicants, the competition has two main stages. The first stage involves creating a portfolio, completing an entry test, writing a motivation letter, providing information about relevant achievements and uploading supporting documents. The second stage involves completing competition tasks under online proctoring.
For the 2026 competition, registration opened on 20 August 2026, and applicants have until 1 November 2026 to complete their registration and portfolio information. First-stage results are scheduled for 13 November 2026, while the second stage will run from 13 November to 21 December 2026. Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral applicants completing the second stage will be monitored through online proctoring, with participants given 180 minutes to complete their tasks.
Participation in the Open Doors competition is free of charge. Applicants should therefore be cautious of individuals or organizations claiming that they can guarantee a scholarship in exchange for an application or “winning” fee. While legitimate education consultants may provide application-support services, no consultant can guarantee that an applicant will win an academic competition.
