Attention all prospective students applying to study in Germany! The German Embassy in Nigeria has officially updated its student visa application process to help reduce wait times and streamline applications.
Here is everything you need to know about the new procedure, effective as of March 25, 2026:
What Has Changed?
- No More Consulate Submissions: Student visa applicants will no longer submit their physical applications or do their biometrics at the German Consulate.
- New VFS Global Centre: All in-person appointments, document scanning, fee collections, and biometric captures are now handled exclusively at the VFS Global application centre located in Lekki, Lagos.
- The Booking Process: You must still complete your extensive online registration via the German Embassy/Consular Services Portal. However, once your appointment is scheduled, you will be directed to the VFS facility in Lagos rather than the consulate.+1
Current 2026 Financial Requirements to Keep in Mind:
- Blocked Account: The standard blocked account (Sperrkonto) requirement to prove financial means is currently set at €11,904 per year (allowing a monthly withdrawal of €992).
Next Steps for Applicants: If you are preparing to apply, ensure your academic documents are formally legalized (Germany does not accept standard apostilles for Nigerian documents) and that your blocked account is funded.
