Every year, the University of Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre in partnership with the United Nations releases the World Happiness Report—ranking countries not just by wealth, but by how fulfilled people actually feel.

And here’s the reality

Many Nigerians dream of relocating for a “better life”… but does moving abroad automatically make you happier?

Let’s break it down.

Happiness Abroad Is Not Guaranteed

The happiest countries in 2026 include:

  • Finland
  • Denmark
  • Iceland
  • Sweden

These countries have strong systems, yes—but they also have something deeper:

  1. Strong social support
  2. High trust among citizens
  3. Close friendships and community

Now ask yourself:

If you relocate today, will you have these?

The Truth Many People Don’t Talk About

Moving abroad can give you:

✅ Better infrastructure
✅ More opportunities
✅ Higher income potential

But it can also come with:

❌ Loneliness and isolation
❌ Cultural shock
❌ Starting life from scratch
❌ Limited support system

According to the report, even countries like the United States and Canada are seeing declining happiness among young people.

So clearly, location alone is not the answer.

What Actually Determines Your Happiness?

The idea comes from Aristotle—happiness is about living a meaningful life and reaching your full potential.

The report highlights key drivers:

  • Your relationships 🤝
  • Your sense of purpose 🎯
  • Your freedom to make life choices 🗳️
  • Your mental and emotional wellbeing 💙

Not just your location.

Social Media vs Reality

A lot of what Nigerians see online about “life abroad” is filtered.

The report found that while internet access helps, heavy social media use is linked to lower happiness in some countries.

So that “perfect life abroad” you see?

It’s not always the full picture.

So… Should You Relocate?

Here’s the honest answer:

✔️ Relocate if:

  • You have a clear plan (study, work, career growth)
  • You’re mentally prepared for challenges
  • You’re building a support system abroad

❌ Don’t relocate if:

  • You believe it will automatically make you happy
  • You’re running away from problems
  • You don’t have a clear direction

Final Thought

According to Jan-Emmanuel De Neve, one of the key findings is simple:

Happiness comes from having people you can rely on.

So whether you stay in Nigeria or move abroad…

👉 Build relationships
👉 Create purpose
👉 Invest in your wellbeing

Because at the end of the day:

Happiness is not a country. It’s a lifestyle.
