Let’s be honest, traveling as a Nigerian can sometimes feel like an extreme sport. Aside proving you have a reason to return home and battling the exchange rate, getting that visa stamp is a huge victory.

Henley & Partners just dropped their 2026 Passport Index, and it ranks how much freedom the world’s passports give you. So, I checked: how much “do-you-know-who-I-am?” power does our Green Passport hold this year?

Here’s the gist.

For 2026, Nigeria sits at the 89th position globally (out of 101).

If you hold a Nigerian passport, you can currently travel to 44 countries without needing to queue up at an embassy beforehand. You either get in visa-free or get a visa on arrival.

While 44 sounds like a fair number, the catch is that most of these spots are within Africa (like Ghana and Rwanda) and a few Caribbean islands. Major hubs in Europe, North America, and parts of Asia are still heavily gatekept.

How We Compare to the Neighbors

It wouldn’t be a proper Naija conversation if we didn’t check how our neighbors are doing.

  • The African Kings: The absolute soft life goes to the Seychelles (ranked 24th). Their citizens can stroll into 154 countries without visa stress. Mauritius (27th) and South Africa (48th) are also doing us proud.
  • The Rivalry: As usual, our West African brothers in Ghana edged us out. They ranked 69th with access to 68 countries.

For global context, Singapore took the number one spot worldwide. They can visit 192 out of 227 countries stress-free. Talk about passport privilege!

Navigating the Globe as a Nigerian

Look, the 89th position isn’t exactly the flex we want, but Nigerians are naturally resourceful. We always find a way. Here is how you can beat the system:

  • Build Your “Travel CV”: Don’t wait for a US or UK visa to start traveling. Take a quick vacation to Cape Verde, go on a safari in Kenya, or relax in the Maldives. A passport filled with entry and exit stamps shows embassies that you are a genuine traveler.
  • The “Power Visa” Hack: If you manage to secure a valid US, UK, or Schengen visa, hold it tight. It acts like a golden key. Countries like Mexico, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia will often let you in much easier just because you have one of those big visas.
  • The “Japa” Alternative: If you have the funds, Citizenship by Investment is the new wave. Investing in a Caribbean passp
